Here we talk with Professor Mary Collins, immunologist and virologist, about her work on developing viral vector-based gene therapies.

Mary is Professor of Immunology in the Division of Infection and Immunity at University College London, the head of the Division of Advanced Therapies at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, and the Director of the Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Molecular Virology.

Mary came and gave a seminar at the CVR earlier this year about her labs elegant work on how Kaposi’s sarcoma virus interacts with – and exploits – the human immune system. But here, Mary describes to us a bit about the past, present and future of gene therapy and how we are using viruses to cure human disease.
